Every 19 October, World Breast Cancer Day invites us to renew our commitment to prevention, care and support for people living with this disease. For the Hospitaller Sisters, this day is also an opportunity to highlight a way of caring that stems from the recognition of human dignity and is expressed through a compassionate, respectful and caring presence.
Caring for Health Means Caring for Life
Prevention and early detection are essential in addressing breast cancer. Promoting access to information, encouraging health check-ups and seeking medical advice whenever changes in the breasts are noticed are important steps in protecting our health.
We therefore encourage all women to learn about preventive measures and the screening tests recommended by healthcare professionals, taking into account their age, medical history and risk factors.
Caring also means taking preventive action, facilitating access to healthcare and fostering a culture of care that places life at the centre. Prevention is a practical expression of our responsibility towards ourselves and others.
Welcoming Every Experience with Tenderness
A breast cancer diagnosis can bring questions, uncertainty and a wide range of emotions. Each person experiences this journey through the lens of their own story, with their own pace, needs and resources. For this reason, support requires an attentive approach that recognises the uniqueness of each person’s experience and welcomes it with respect.
Sometimes, our desire to help leads us to offer words such as “you have to be strong”, “you have to stay positive” or “everything happens for a reason”. However, Hospitality invites us to go beyond immediate responses: to welcome what the other person is experiencing, listen without judging and offer support without dictating how they should feel.
Sometimes, caring means offering words of encouragement; at other times, it means remaining silent, respecting their pace or asking what they need. It is a presence that acknowledges vulnerability without reducing anyone to their illness, allowing each stage of the journey to be lived with the confidence of knowing that someone is there for them.
Hospitality: A Presence That Recognises Human Dignity
The mission of the Hospitaller Sisters reminds us that every person deserves to be welcomed in their entirety, with attention to their physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions. This holistic perspective commits us to providing care that combines professional expertise with human warmth.
Through Science and Tenderness, Hospitality becomes tangible in care that is both rigorous and sensitive to each person’s story, feelings and needs. It means recognising their dignity, respecting their autonomy and creating spaces of trust where they can feel heard, understood and supported.
This approach to care also extends to families and those who support the person throughout their illness, recognising their own needs for guidance, support and accompaniment.
An Invitation to Care for Others and Allow Ourselves to Be Cared For
On this World Breast Cancer Day, we renew our commitment to prevention, health promotion and holistic care. This commitment translates into concrete actions: staying informed, attending recommended screenings, facilitating access to healthcare and standing alongside those living with the disease.
Hospitality comes to life when every person finds a place where their dignity is recognised, their vulnerability is welcomed and their story is accompanied with science and tenderness.
Caring for life is a shared mission. Let us bring it to life in every encounter.
