Listening to Care: When Talking Also Helps

World Alzheimer’s Day invites us to look beyond the disease and place the person living with it at the center, with their story, their needs, their emotions, and their dignity. When accompanying people with Alzheimer’s, caring also means listening. Listening with patience, without judgment, and respecting each person’s pace and ways of expressing themselves. Because although the disease may make communication more difficult, there is always something the person is trying to express, and it deserves to be heard and welcomed. At Hermanas Hospitalarias, we understand care as a relationship of encounter. Being present, paying attention, asking questions, giving space to speak, and accompanying without imposing are concrete ways of embodying Hospitality. They also help the person feel safe enough to express what they need and, at their own pace, become open to receiving help. Because talking can be the first step toward allowing oneself to be accompanied. Talking helps us help. On this day, we renew our commitment to continuing to care through closeness and listening, accompanying each person and their families with respect, sensitivity, and Hospitality.
