XI S. João de Deus Psychiatry Congress: Quality in mental health. Caring with knowledge and humanity.

The XI S. João de Deus Psychiatry Congress, promoted by the Institute of the Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Portuguese S. João de Deus Institute, took place on 23, 24 and 25 February 2012 at the facilities of Lisbon’s Catholic University. Its theme was Quality in mental health.

The event was attended by some 380 people, including a number of technical experts from medical centres. 170 sisters and co-workers attended from our centres, and 95 brothers and co-workers attended from centres of the Brothers.

We would particularly like to mention and express our thanks for the contributions from a number of the Spanish provinces: The Barcelona province sent two speakers, Dr. Edith Pomarol and Dr. Manuel Sánchez, who presented conferences on “Recent advances in neuroimaging of schizophrenia” and “Day care in psychogeriatrics”, respectively; and the provinces of Madrid and Palencia sent two technical experts, Dr. José Ignacio Quemada and Dr. Marcos Ríos, who organised and presented the “Models of neuropsychological intervention and rehabilitation” symposium, and five Sisters who also participated in the event.

Dr. Hercílio Oliveira came from even further afield, the Vice Province of Brazil, to give a conference entitled “Drug addiction and psychosis”.

As well as the various speakers already mentioned, a number of lecturers also attended, including José Luis Ayuso from Madrid,  Professor Brian Leonard from Dublin and Professor German Berrios from London.

Various professors from the Psychiatry and Mental Health departments of Portugal’s Medical Universities also attended, accompanied by other members of their teams.
