We share the testimony of Benedicta Asafo, the Pharmacist of our center in Foso, who tells us in first person about our work there.
- What is the main focus or specialty of St. Francis Xavier Hospital? Provide care and support for people who are sick, disabled, elderly, or suffering from dementia.
- How many patients does the hospital typically serve on a monthly basis? 8,065
- What types of medical equipment does the hospital have available to support patient care? Medical Diagnostic Equipment, Surgical Equipment, Nursing Equipment, Physiotherapy Equipment, Disinfection & Sterile Equipment, Scan & X-Ray, Dental Equipment
- How does the mission of Sisters Hospitallers impact the way hospitality is provided in St. Francis Xavier Hospital? The mission of sisters hospitallers expresses the charisma of hospitality with special preference for the poorest and most marginalized. This has resulted in the establishment of a mental health unit and a medical relief fund to cater for the poorest within Assin Fosu and its environs.
- Can you describe any unique programs or initiatives in place at the hospital to promote hospitality and compassionate care for patients? Durbars: patients who are marginalized are invited to a durbar for an interaction and socialization. As part of activities to mark the celebration of this event, patients who are admitted at the various wards are visited and shown love, care and also receive prayers from the chaplain. They are also provided with groceries such rice, soap, milo, milk, bread etc.
- How does the hospital strive to create a welcoming and supportive environment for patients and their families? Annual training on hospitaller values are organized for all staff. Sensitization on hospitaller values has been incorporated into our induction programs for all new staff. The smile that is worn on the faces of the staff as a result of these trainings and sensitization has created an enabling environment for patients to feel at home. Also, our home visit programs have yielded a positive result as staff visit patients at home to interact with them.
- Can you share any success stories or examples of how the hospital’s hospitality initiatives have positively impacted patient outcomes or satisfaction? Patients who cannot afford their medical treatment are attended to and are made to sign an undertaking with the hope that they will be able to pay at a later date.
- What are some of the biggest challenges that St. Francis Xavier Hospital faces in providing quality healthcare to its patients? High cost of medical equipment and consumables: the rise in the cost of medical equipment and consumables sometimes limit the facility’s ability to provide affordable healthcare service to the patients who seek medical care in the hospital.
- How can people in the local community or beyond help support the hospital in addressing these challenge? The people in the community can support the hospital by providing financial support to the financially underprivileged who seek medical care in St Francis Xavier Hospital. Also, they can assist by donating certain vital medical equipment to help in provision of medical care to reduce the financial burden of the facility.
