Sometimes we think of the great Fathers of the Church as unreachable figures, far removed from the struggles and dilemmas of our daily lives. However, what if we told you that Saint Augustine was much more like you than you imagine?<\/p>\n
Before becoming one of the most brilliant minds of Christianity and being venerated as one of the Patron Saints of the Congregation of the Hospital Sisters, Augustine was a young man full of doubts, restlessness, and profound contradictions. He tirelessly searched for the meaning of his life, made mistakes, started over, and never stopped asking questions.<\/p>\n
His journey of searching led him to discover a transforming truth that continues to illuminate the mission of our Hospitaller Family today: the answer to the restlessness of the heart is not found in isolation, but when life opens itself to God and is shared with others. For this reason, from the very origins of the Institution, we embraced his “Rule of Life” in order to learn how to shape fraternal communities and live with one spirit, truly being “one heart and one soul.”<\/p>\n
More than 1,600 years later, his life experience continues to challenge us. We share three teachings of Saint Augustine that can help you look at your own restlessness from a new perspective:<\/p>\n
1. “Existential crises” as a driving force for seeking<\/strong><\/p>\n Before attaining holiness, Augustine was a young man thirsty for answers. He went through profound crises of identity and faith. His story reminds us that doubts and not having everything figured out are not a failure, but the beginning of a true journey of growth and encounter with the truth. Questioning the world and one’s own purpose is the first step toward discovering our vocation.<\/p>\n 2. Choosing friendships that transform<\/strong><\/p>\n Saint Augustine is probably the greatest ecclesial reference regarding community life and friendship. He understood one vital lesson: no one grows alone! Faced with the obstacles of individualism, which today isolates us and makes us believe that we are self-sufficient, Augustine invites us to overcome them by building true relationships of friendship. Accompaniment, community, and sharing everyday life are essential to bringing out the best in each person and sustaining one another in moments of fragility.<\/p>\n 3. Understanding the restlessness of the heart<\/strong><\/p>\n Augustine was an expert on the human soul and wrote a phrase that, despite the passing centuries, remains completely relevant: “Our heart is restless until it rests in You.” This statement is a direct invitation to recognize that the search for meaning is an unavoidable part of the human experience. The heart finds true peace only when it discovers that for which it was created: to love God and to give that love to our brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n One heart in the hospitaller mission<\/strong><\/p>\n At the Hospital Sisters, we believe that seeking the truth, overcoming the barriers of individualism, and surrounding ourselves with a community that helps us grow are an essential part of our journey.
