The Princess of Girona Foundation today held the presentation of the 2023 Princess of Girona School Award, which this year recognizes the benchmark in inclusive education of the Pur\u00edsima Concepci\u00f3n Special Education Center, part of the Sisters Hospitallers and affiliated with the Hospitallers Foundation. The ceremony took place during <\/span>H.M. the King\u2019s visit<\/b> to the facilities, where he learned firsthand about the center\u2019s innovative methods to foster <\/span>students\u2019 integral development<\/b> through a fully personalized approach. With special attention to diversity, their educational model has become a national reference thanks to the CeRA project (Specialized Center for Reference and Support).<\/span><\/p>\n

Pilar Alegr\u00eda<\/b>, Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports; <\/span>Juanma Moreno<\/b>, President of the Andalusian Regional Government; <\/span>Jes\u00fas Aguirre<\/b>, President of the Andalusian Parliament; <\/span>Pedro Fern\u00e1ndez<\/b>, Government Delegate in Andalusia; <\/span>Marifr\u00e1n Carazo<\/b>, Mayor of Granada; <\/span>Carmen Castillo<\/b>, Minister of Educational Development and Vocational Training; <\/span>Sister Fuencisla Mart\u00edn<\/b>, Provincial Superior of the Sisters Hospitallers; <\/span>Alberto Mart\u00edn<\/b>, Managing Director of the Hospitallers Foundation; <\/span>Francisco Belil<\/b>, President of the Princess of Girona Foundation; <\/span>Salvador Tasqu\u00e9<\/b>, General Director of the Princess of Girona Foundation; and <\/span>Lu\u00eds Carvajal<\/b>, Head of the Foundation’s Education Task Force\u2014among other local authorities, including <\/span>Inma Garrido<\/b>, director of the center\u2014His Majesty toured various parts of the school to witness how the center empowers its students and promotes their well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the tour\u2014and within the framework of the CeRA project (Specialized Center for Reference and Support)\u2014visitors were able to observe how the school supports students in addressing personal challenges related to cognitive, motor, communication, or emotional development. They visited several specialized classrooms, including the <\/span>halotherapy room<\/b>, where therapy is conducted through the inhalation of micro-particles of salt in a controlled environment that mimics the conditions of natural salt mines, and the <\/span>hydrotherapy room<\/b>, which uses the properties of water to improve mobility, muscle strength, balance, and coordination. They also explored the <\/span>Black Light Room<\/b>, designed to stimulate sensory development through ultraviolet light, sparking curiosity and enhancing sensory processing. The tour continued to the <\/span>Independent Living Workshop<\/b>, which prepares students to lead as autonomous a life as possible, and the <\/span>Circular Economy Workshop<\/b>, where students engage in sustainability practices by promoting the reuse and recycling of materials. In this space, H.M. the King discovered a <\/span>canvas<\/b>\u2014created over the past few months by students using recycled materials\u2014that replicates a photograph of the Royal Family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The center\u2019s director<\/b> welcomed all attendees \u201cto a place full of heart and passion, where the true protagonists are the children and adolescents who are here every day\u2014you are our example to follow. We learn from each of you with every struggle, every step you take.\u201d She also thanked the families, saying, \u201cTogether, we are a family. For us, the great challenges of each day have no limits.\u201d \u201cTo the teachers, thank you for your enthusiasm, your commitment, and for believing in what we do\u2014responding to each family, each child, with passion, a smile, and dedication every single day.\u201d Lastly, she expressed her gratitude to the Sisters Hospitallers \u201cfor creating this center and for having the vision to believe in each person, to put them at the center, and to innovate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alejandro, Alba, Nacho, and Javi, students from the center, took the stage to receive the award from His Majesty the King, who highlighted the example of \u201cteachers whose dedication helps build a more inclusive, more equitable, and more empathetic society.\u201d Finally, he celebrated not only the recognition itself but, above all, the invaluable impact of their work on so many lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Francisco Belil<\/b>, President of the PG Foundation, emphasized, \u201cThis award, this year more than ever, recognizes the value of being a model of educational excellence in a field that had not yet been honored\u2014special education and attention to diversity\u2014which remains largely unknown.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The ceremony included a musical performance by \u201c<\/span>M\u00fasica desde dentro<\/b>,\u201d a group formed by alumni of CeRA Pur\u00edsima Concepci\u00f3n. Afterwards, two artists from the \u201cArt Generation\u201d program of the Princess of Girona Foundation performed a couple of pieces focused on emotional well-being. The event concluded with a joint rendition of \u201cVuelvo a Granada\u201d by Granada-born singer-songwriter <\/span>Miguel R\u00edos.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

During the day, young participants in the Foundation\u2019s \u201cEducation Generation\u201d program covered the event via the educational radio project \u201cVoices That Teach,\u201d working in parallel with the national radio program \u201cRNE Mornings,\u201d which broadcast live from the center.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inclusivity and Equal Opportunity<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cFor its leadership in showcasing inspiring projects that advance a truly inclusive school through its CeRA project, focused on diversity, innovation in education, and mentoring other institutions, highlighting the strong, coordinated work of its management and teaching teams.\u201d This was the jury\u2019s statement when awarding the 2023 School of the Year Award to the Pur\u00edsima Concepci\u00f3n Special Education Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the motto <\/span>\u201cI am capable, I am the protagonist\u201d<\/b>, this center builds its educational project on the foundation of the integral development of each person, guided by the conviction that inclusive education is a fundamental right\u2014essential to ensuring identity, dignity, and well-being. It also serves as a key tool in achieving equal opportunity. In its classrooms, the center actively embraces diversity through innovative methodologies that foster student competencies and present meaningful challenges, empowering each student to take the lead in their own life, connect with others, become a vital part of their school and family communities, and participate fully and actively in society\u2014regardless of their individual support needs. To support these goals, the school has also developed a number of digital applications designed to enhance areas such as executive functioning, motor and sensory development, attention, memory, language, reading, and math skills. But the center\u2019s impact goes beyond its walls. It looks outward, striving to create broader social change. To this end, it shares its knowledge, tools, and experiences with professionals and educational institutions across all levels, raising awareness about the urgent need to transform educational practices and build a system grounded in inclusion and equity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>2023 Princess of Girona School Award<\/b> was officially announced on June 6 at the Foundation\u2019s headquarters in Girona. The jury of education experts was composed of <\/span>Pilar Bahamonde<\/b>, director of CEIP Gumersindo Azc\u00e1rate (recipient of the 2022 award), who served as chair; <\/span>Javier Garc\u00eda<\/b>, Director of Programs at the Bot\u00edn Foundation; <\/span>Elena D\u00edaz<\/b>, Head of Corporate Citizenship and Public Affairs at Samsung Spain; <\/span>Cristina Gomis<\/b>, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Zurich Spain; <\/span>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Moncasi<\/b>, Director of the Vertex Bioenergy Foundation; <\/span>Elena Mart\u00ednez<\/b>, Dean of the School of Education at UNIR; <\/span>Mar\u00eda Victoria Garc\u00eda<\/b>, Director of Projects and External Relations at the Banc Sabadell Foundation; and <\/span>Miriam Reyes<\/b>, founder and director of Aprendices Visuales [Visual Learners] and Escuelas Visuales [Visual Schools], and recipient of the 2017 Princess of Girona Social Award.<\/span><\/p>\n

School of the Year Award: A Benchmark for Educational Innovation<\/b><\/p>\n

This center joins the community of past award-winning schools known for transforming education through entrepreneurial spirit and disruptive talent: <\/span>CEIP Andaluc\u00eda de Fuengirola<\/b> (2018), <\/span>Escuelas Profesionales Sagrada Familia de \u00c9cija \u2013 Fundaci\u00f3n Pe\u00f1aflor de \u00c9cija<\/b> (2019), <\/span>CRA Mestra Clara Torres de Tui<\/b> (2020), <\/span>Instituto de Educaci\u00f3n Secundaria Ram\u00f3n y Cajal de Zaragoza<\/b> (2021) and <\/span>CEIP Gumersindo Azc\u00e1rate de Le\u00f3n<\/b> (2022).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With this award, the Princess of Girona Foundation honors pioneering educational institutions that are committed to <\/span>fostering talent and driving educational innovation<\/b>. Its goal is to create role models, cultivate leadership, and help transform the education sector in favor of a more inclusive and just society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the recognition, winning schools receive a tailored training program and hands-on experiences in educational innovation, developed by the Princess of Girona Foundation for the center\u2019s teaching staff.<\/span><\/p>\n
