Sisters Hospitallers<\/a>, like all the others in our Congregation, was preceded by a period of relative autonomy in relation to the mother province, continuing under its tutelage or directly dependent on the General Council, under the name of “Delegation”. The first houses in Portugal also went through the state of delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe number of Sisters with which the\nPortuguese Province began, in 1946, expresses the vitality that the\nCongregation had, already at that time with 274 sisters distributed by the\nexisting houses. At the time of the canonical approval and creation of the\nProvinces, the quality of the religious who worked in Portugal was so high that\nthree of them were called to govern the provinces then formed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Sister Dulce Nombre de Jes\u00fas,\nSuperior of the House of S. Gon\u00e7alo (Funchal), was elected Provincial of Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Sister Maria de la Circumcisi\u00f3n, who\nwas in Idanha, went to preside over the Provincial Government of Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– Sister Soledade de Maria assumed the\nposition of first Superior of the Province of Our Lady of Fatima, therefore, of\nthe Province of Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Growth and reorganization<\/h4>\n\n\n\n After the founding of the Casa de Sa\u00fade\ndo Bom Jesus in 1932, a period of 16 years followed without any new foundation,\nuntil in 1948 the<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Children’s Sanatorium of Nossa Senhora\nde F\u00e1tima, in Parede, which was followed by: in 1950 the Sanatorium of the\nSagrada Familia, in S. Roque (Funchal), in 1956 the Psychiatric Clinic of S.\nJos\u00e9 was founded, in Quinta da Luz (Lisbon ), in 1959 the Marracuene Psychiatric\nHospital (Louren\u00e7o Marques-Mozambique). That same year, the Casa de Sa\u00fade\nRainha Santa Isabel was also founded in Condeixa. In 1963 the sisters began the\npresence of the Congregation in Brazil, in 1967 the Ponta Delgada and Angra do\nHero\u00edsmo Health Houses were founded, Azores, in 1968 the sisters opened the\nCenter for the Recovery of Minors in Assumar, Alentejo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, the sisters of the\nProvince of Portugal broadened the horizons of the hospital mission in their\nway of caring for the sick, collaborating in the opening of some \u201cHomes for the\nelderly\u201d in the interior of the country: S. Sim\u00e3o de Lit\u00e9m, Aldeia do Bispo,\nCastelo Branco and Moimenta da Serra, some of these places were true nurseries\nof hospitable vocations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1994, with the celebration of the\ncentenary of the Casa de Sa\u00fade da Idanha, the Sisters were born in the city of\nGuarda, a place of great significance in the life of Father Menni and the first\nPortuguese Sisters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A feeling of gratitude invades us all\nfor this path of continuous adaptation and restructuring, of so many sisters\nwho have preceded us and who are for us a source of inspiration for the moment\nwe live. Brave and determined, the sisters adapted with apostolic creativity to\nthe signs that God was placing on their path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
