{"id":52268,"date":"2021-09-20T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/?p=52268"},"modified":"2021-09-20T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T15:30:00","slug":"new-project-for-the-care-of-children-with-mental-illness-in-bolivia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hospitalarias.org\/en\/new-project-for-the-care-of-children-with-mental-illness-in-bolivia\/","title":{"rendered":"New project for the care of children with mental illness in Bolivia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Did you know that Sisters Hospitallers has launched a new project in Bolivia for children and young people who are disabled or living with a mental illness? <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/Sonia-Arnez.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52269\" width=\"303\" height=\"227\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My name is Sonia Arnez and I am a Psychologist and Technical Coordinator\nat Sisters Hospitallers\u2019 Puntiti Therapeutic Community in Cochabamba, Bolivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A bit of history<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its arrival in Bolivia in 1966, Sisters Hospitallers Congregation\nhas become a role model for caring for people who are disabled or living with a\nmental illness. To appreciate their hard work, the Government of Bolivia\nawarded it with the delegated administration of the Puntiti Therapeutic\nCommunity. This facility takes care of severely disabled children and young\npeople since 1 September 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lead by the Hospitaller charism<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Puntiti Therapeutic Community currently accommodates 60 orphans and abandoned\nyoung people who have a range of disabilities. It provides 24-hour care all\nyear long, following the Hospitaller spirit. Many families visit the centre\nseeking care for their disabled children. In Bolivia, statistics show that only\n30% of this group receive some form of care. In 2017, motivated by the\nHospitaller charism and our desire to face this issue, we began to dream of a\nnew Hospitaller project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This dream consisted of the construction of an outpatient centre, apart\nfrom the Puntiti Therapeutic Community, which would care for children and young\npeople with disabilities. This non-profit clinic would include the following\nservices: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; An outpatient clinic that focuses on rehabilitation and early\nstimulation for children under the age of 7 that have autism or other\ndisabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Specialised mental health consultations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Other services that address social reality through the Hospitaller\ncharism.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, funded by Fundaci\u00f3n Telemarat\u00f3n in Cochabamba, construction\nbegan. Despite it being halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now been\nresumed. The building has two floors, with a stimulation clinic on the ground\nfloor and a space for alternative therapies and support for disabled students\nenrolled in regular schools on the second floor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these new mechanisms, which are expected to be fully operational by\n2022, we hope to enhance therapeutic efficacy, offer more human care, and\nindividually target the potential of each child, while respecting their\nparticular limitations and learning pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We continue to dream<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We expect this expansion project to continue growing by creating\noutpatient consultation spaces for general medicine, psychiatry, neurology,\ndentistry, physiotherapy, psychology, and speech therapy. However, we are still\nwaiting for funding to make this dream come true.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of St. Benedict Menni and our founders,\nwe will revive the project and address the needs of people who are suffering\nfrom mental illnesses but are unable to access healthcare.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you know that Sisters Hospitallers has launched a new project in Bolivia for children and young people who are disabled or living with a mental illness?
