{"id":52198,"date":"2021-07-14T09:51:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T09:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/?p=52198"},"modified":"2021-07-14T09:51:00","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T09:51:00","slug":"humane-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hospitalarias.org\/en\/humane-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Humane actions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr Elena O\u00f1a, a member of the Pastoral Care team at the Sisters Hospitallers\u2019 Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe clinic in Ecuador, explains how we can show our humanity through healthcare. \u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/07\/eeee-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52202\" width=\"243\" height=\"292\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1998, the World Health Organization (WHO)\nincorporated spiritual health: \u2018Health is a dynamic state of complete physical,\nmental, spiritual and social well being and not merely the absence of disease\nor infirmity\u2019 (Javier et al., n.d., p. 30).&nbsp; Though pastoral care is said\nto have existed for hundreds of years, only in 1985 did Pope John Paul II institute\nthe Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Healthcare Workers with the aim\nof promoting care for the sick through local churches.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking at healthcare professionals, it\nis clear in some cases that a need exists to include basic concepts in their\ntraining to outfit them with the skills necessary to provide pastoral services\nand respect the fundamental values of the person suffering. Individual actions are\nnot enough; it is necessary to design and offer teams training programmes in\nspiritual care to raise awareness among care professionals (Javier et al.,\nn.d.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pastoral care aims to be part of the\ncommunal effort that facilitates each person\u2019s encounter with Jesus and that\nshapes our actions with humanity, toward our neighbour, represented by all of\nthose close to us: our patients, relatives, colleagues, etc. (Marinelli, 2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The goals of pastoral care<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though the goals of pastoral care are\nadapted to each person, some include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The culture of life<\/strong>: from a health perspective, all research, interventions, and procedures\nmust be conducted with respect for human dignity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The culture of health<\/strong>: from the cradle to the grave, it aims to develop an educational\napproach to health and morality with a comprehensive view of the human being. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Humanisation<\/strong>: a\nfactor in all interpersonal relationships between users and care professionals,\nguaranteed through an adequate organisational structure and distribution of\nresources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By loving one\u2019s neighbour as oneself, Jesus\ninvites us to provide moral and spiritual support to the sick though service as\nan entity of health, assisting in the acceptance and appreciation of the\nsuffering state through the instrument of prayer. \u2018<em>Providing service to\nthose who suffer is the basis by which one becomes the protagonist of\ntherapeutic and pastoral decisions (the sick as the subject of pastoral care)\u2019<\/em>\n(Marinelli, 2003, page 2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u2018Dehumanisation occurs when man does not\nrecognise himself as a moral subject, a condition that forces him to seek the wellbeing\nof the vulnerable person and be responsible for his actions\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;(Mar\u00eda et al., 2020, page 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terms like comprehensive care, humanisation,\ndehumanisation, human dignity, rights, and others exist in the healthcare field;\nwe also find them in the provision of health services and cited by users in\nsatisfaction surveys. This information makes us wonder about the professionals\nat Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de Guadalupe clinic, a centre of the Sisters Hospitallers of\nthe Sacred Heart of Jesus, which provides palliative care, mental health\nservices, and has a Pastoral team. Are the professionals aware? Do they understand\npastoral care? Do they connect the terms <em>health<\/em>\nand <em>pastoral<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key words: health, pastoral, training, humanity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This assessment gives us a clearer\ninsight, wherein healthcare professionals, regardless of our role, must embrace\nthe spirituality that allows us to know ourselves and to live a life of service\nto others, with humanity, generating satisfaction from the organisation\u2019s <em>raison d\u2019etre<\/em>, which is the patient, and\nbeing part of a good work environment. Spirituality gives our lives meaning,\npurpose; it connects us and helps us empathise with other human beings.
