Discover how the use of new technologies, robotics, and virtual reality provide clear benefits in their treatment. <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/06\/200619-Marcos-rios.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52149\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My name is Marcos Rios and I am Coordinator of the Brain Injury unit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalarias.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sisters Hospitallers\u2019 (se abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\">Sisters Hospitallers\u2019<\/a><strong> <\/strong>Beata Mar\u00eda Ana Hospital in Madrid (Spain).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the hospital\u2019s Brain Injury unit, we work\nwith those who have suffered brain damage mainly through stroke, head trauma,\nor other causes of acquired brain damage. The consequences of an injury can be\nmotor, sensory, cognitive, or emotional, and all affect the performance of a\nvariety of daily activities, which can disrupt the family, social, and work\nenvironment. The incorporation of robotics and virtual reality in\nneuro-rehabilitation stems from the need to continue improving the treatment of\npatients suffering from brain injuries. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of new\ntechnologies, robotics, and virtual reality has obvious benefits that affect\nall treatment areas. In physiotherapy, it permits the repetition of movements,\ncreating highly demanding situations (simulating stumbling or slipping in\ncomplete safety for the patient), as well as elements that simultaneously work\nthe upper body in combination with cognitive stimulation. In speech therapy,\ncommunicators and computers are controlled with the eye, capturing ocular\nmovement, or instruments to recover swallowing capability. In occupational\ntherapy, robotic gloves with sensors help train fine motor skills and, by\nextension, improve the function of hands in daily life, an ailment with a more\ndire prognosis previously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, in\ncognitive recovery, tele-rehabilitation platforms, cognitive stimulation, the\nuse of large-scale screens, and virtual reality equipment open up an array of\npossibilities to improve attention, visual tracking, problem solving, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This allows for a swifter recovery,\noptimising intervention times and providing more options to develop other\nskills throughout a lengthy rehabilitation process. The fact that cognitive\nelements are combined with upper and lower body exercise makes this a complete,\nchallenging, and motivating activity for patients. Without a doubt, patients\nwho realise they have access to the best technology for their rehabilitation\nwill increase their level of involvement in the treatment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While these tools do not replace therapists, they do allow time to reflect on the relevant aspects of rehabilitation and optimise the recovery capacity of each patient. Ongoing contact with them is irreplaceable. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Menni Brain Injury Network <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1992, the Sisters Hospitallers have operated various Brain Injury units at several centres in Spain, forming the <a href=\"https:\/\/da\u00f1ocerebral.es\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Menni Brain Injury Network (se abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\">Menni Brain Injury Network<\/a>, which aims to rehabilitate patients with acquired brain damage and assist their families. As our rehabilitation approach evolves, it is possible that, in the future, biomedical engineers, physicists, and robotics specialists will join the treatment teams.
