World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation 2024: Wait and Act with Creation

Every September 1, the Catholic Church celebrates the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, an opportunity to reflect on our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. This year, Pope Francis invites us to “Hope and Act with Creation,” a call to unite our faith with concrete actions that protect our common home.

What is the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation?

Established by Pope Francis in 2015, this day seeks to mobilize the Church and all people of good will in prayer and action for the care of the environment. Inspired by St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Rom 8:19-25), this year’s theme encourages us to reflect on how our lives can contribute to an integral ecology, promoting a harmony that embraces both humanity and creation.

In his message, Pope Francis exhorts us to live an incarnated faith, which manifests itself in care for others and for the planet. He reminds us of the urgency of rethinking human power, seeking a transformation that responds to ecological crises with compassion and justice.

Our response as Sisters Hospitallers

As Sisters Hospitaller, we join in this call with a spirit of hospitality that transcends human boundaries to embrace all of creation. In our daily mission, we seek to be witnesses to God’s love through holistic care for people, especially the most vulnerable, and we extend that same care to the environment, aware that our health and well-being are intrinsically linked to the health of our planet.

We promote sustainable practices in our communities and care centers, inspired by a living faith that sees in creation the loving work of God. Thus, we respond to Pope Francis’ call with concrete actions that reflect our commitment to an integral ecology.

On this day of prayer for our common home, we especially remember the words of St. Benedict Menni, founder of our congregation: “Contemplating the immensity of the ocean, the work of my God’s hands, I come more and more desirous to love my Jesus, with all my heart and soul.” May this day inspire us to deepen our love for God through the care of his creation.
