The brothers of st John of God depart from Dinan

On 6 June 2013 the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God officially departed from the Hospital Centre of Dinan, France.

The 300 people attending the mass were able to commemorate the 178 years of service by the Brothers Hospitaller to the
mentally ill and offer their support the Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus who will now continue the work of their Brothers with the St. John of God Foundation.

Many patients from the hospital attended the mass, which was presided over by Mons. Denis Moutel, bishop of the diocese, along with the centre management, co-workers, friends, volunteers, well-known persons from civil and military spheres and Brother Giampietro Luzzato, councillor of the General Supervisor of the Hospital Order who was in Dinan for the purpose of making a canonical visit and Brother Alain-Samuel Jeancler, provincial superior.

Before an assembly which expressed its emotion at the departure of the Brothers, Brother Alain-Samuel assured that the closing of the community was « a difficult decision which we must respect and accept by trusting in God. Departure is no easy thing; in fact, there is a proverb that says leaving is a little like dying… But is it not true that the same happens to a grain of wheat which falls to the ground and must die in order to bear fruit?» He then officially delivered the keys of the community to the Sisters Hospitallers, together with a candle symbolising the continuity of the spirit of St. John of God in the hospital centre. The patients had prepared a panel with the imprints of the hands of the sisters, patients, co-workers and even the bishop surrounding a pomegranate which, according to Sister María Estrella Pér ez de Ciriza, responsible for the foundation, «symbolises that the transmission of this charisma is in our hands».
