Did you Know…?

Did you know that hospital charisma is reflected in every activity we carry out with users?

This is how Rukhsana Bib, who has worked at the Footherley Hall Home in Shenstone, UK, of the Hospitaller Sisters for 26 years, lives it. She will share her experience with us, with so many years of service.

Could you tell us about your experience working with the elderly?

My experience working with the elderly has been rewarding, as the smallest thing you can do for them makes them happy. I had no experience in this field until I came to work here and it seemed like the best job I have ever had.

What kind of activities are carried out in the senior centers of the Hospitaller Sisters and how is the Hospitaller charism reflected in them?

The activities we do here are various competitions, singing, walks, chair exercises, painting. Walks around the compound. The hospital charisma is reflected in them, as we include everyone, make them feel welcome and cared for, and promote their well-being at every opportunity.

Could you share any memorable stories or anecdotes you have witnessed?

Over the years I have grown closer with the residents I have cared for and their families; there is a lot of laughter and a lot of tears at the end of life.

How do you involve residents’ families in activities?

When residents’ families visit, the staff always makes them feel welcome. The residents like to see the children, the animals and sing old songs, and even if they don’t remember the activity afterwards, at that moment they smile and are happy.

What motivates you to continue working with seniors after so many years?

What motivates me to continue working with seniors is the fact that I can make a difference in caring for residents, and the reward I get from caring for someone is priceless.
