Always with us, Pope Francis

Today, April 21st, 2025, Pope Francis passed away in Rome at the age of 88. From the Sisters Hospitallers, we join the entire Church in prayer, entrusting his soul to God and giving thanks for his life—a guiding light for our congregation.

A Great Legacy

Pope Francis, inspired by the image of Jesus, the Good Samaritan, constantly reminded us of the value of mercy and the importance of approaching human fragility with humility and compassion. In every World Day of the Sick, Francis emphasized the need to care for those who suffer, modeling ourselves after the protagonist of Jesus’ parable:

“This is why it is so important that the whole Church, in relation to illness too, should confront the example of the Gospel Good Samaritan, so as to become a true “field hospital.” Its mission—especially in the historical circumstances we are living through—is expressed in the exercise of care. We are all fragile and vulnerable; we all need that compassionate attention that knows how to pause, draw near, heal, and lift up. The situation of the sick is therefore a call that breaks through indifference and slows the pace of those who go on as if they had no sisters or brothers.”

These words resonate deeply in the hearts of the entire Hospitaller Family. In our hospitaller charism, the Good Samaritan is a prototype of humanity that guides all our actions. He calls us not only to treat illness, but to care for the person who is ill—their dignity, culture, and rights. Thank you, Francis, for your teachings and your enduring legacy.

On behalf of the Hospitaller community, we lift our prayers for the eternal rest of the Holy Father. May the Light that has no end shine upon him.
