Fundación Hospitalarias has launched the new Barcelona Integrated Intermediate Care Centre (CAIIB) Jordà this week. The centre is part of the Fundación Hospitalarias Barcelona Nord Management Unit, formerly known as Hospital San Rafael. Located in the Sant Genís dels Agudells neighbourhood, it is now a provider for CatSalut and is part of the Catalan public healthcare network, SISCAT.
The new facility has 120 beds, expandable to 144, distributed across 84 rooms: 48 single rooms and 36 double rooms. The building incorporates features designed to promote the wellbeing of the people receiving care, including a rooftop designed as a therapeutic garden and planters integrated into the façade. Its modular and flexible design allows the spaces to be adapted to different care needs and public health emergency situations.
A New Model of Care and Innovation
The CAIIB Jordà is designed for people with complex clinical and social needs, including people with cognitive impairment, psychogeriatric or neuropsychiatric profiles, complex mental health conditions, intellectual disabilities and acquired brain injury, particularly when situations of frailty or difficulties in the person’s usual environment are present. It will also serve as a reference centre for people affected by Huntington’s disease.
The centre will provide care for situations that, while not requiring urgent attention, need complex, intensive and multidisciplinary intervention that cannot be guaranteed at home, in a residential facility or through conventional hospital pathways. Its role will be to complement the healthcare system, supporting the person’s return to their usual care setting or reference environment once the intervention has been completed.
Innovation is also one of its key areas of development through the CAIIB Jordà Innovation Lab, promoted together with The MotherTrees Innovation Ecosystem. The laboratory aims to connect healthcare and social needs with companies and other stakeholders within the innovation ecosystem in order to develop solutions applicable to the care of people with complex needs.
The construction of the CAIIB Jordà is part of Fundación Hospitalarias’ investment plan, which allocated €59 million in 2025 to various projects, including the expansion of the Ciempozuelos Master Plan and the new Fundación Hospitalarias Navarra building, inaugurated in May 2026.
Fundación Hospitalarias is a canonical entity that, in 2025, assumed the bulk of the healthcare activity previously carried out by the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain, continuing the healthcare mission begun by the Congregation in 1881.
